Director to Present at Pecha Kucha
Paul Rustand, Director of Widgets & Stone, has been asked to be one of six presenters at the Chattanooga Pecha Kucha. This, the first Pecha Kucha event in the city, will start at 6:20pm Thursday, November 13 at the green|spaces resource center. Speakers will last about an hour, then the floor will open up for intermingling and discussions with drinks and snacks in hand.
Pecha Kucha is the Japanese word for conversation -- the idea is to have speakers discuss 20 images, 20 seconds each, totaling: 6 minutes 40 seconds per speaker. Keeping presentations short and simple. "Conversation not dissertation."

Design as Service
Yes, it is true that the design profession is considered a service (although designers are just as often providing a product too), but that's not the kind of "service" this entry will discuss... The kind of service I see design and the design process providing is "the act of helping someone" -- like a servant, truly serving an organization or an individual. More often than not, this aspect of our role is resented rather than celebrated -- why? What would happen if more of us saw this as our highest purpose as designers?

35-85

A party, in Chattanooga, on an ordinary Monday night? This is one problem if it's your daughter's birthday but quite another if it's a client's objective. Especially when the client's target audience is professionals, families, singles, couples, students... in short, everybody. Unless the event is emblazoned with orange and white and serving nachos around a big screen, it can be hard to draw a crowd on a Monday in Chattanooga.
