LAST DAY

overload! (p.m.)

Overview:
Attended a stream-of-conciousness focus session by Ze Frank on the "Pedagogy of Play" - the notion of play as opposed to planning in realtion to creative work and business strategy. The final main stage presentations wrapped up with Griffith Observatory director Mark Pine showing Imagery from Space, MoMA curator Paola Antonelli showing pieces from the upcoming exhibit "SAFE" - designs for safety, security and protection, and lastly Stefan Sagmeister on "Design and Happiness." Then we went to the Museum of Science for drinks, food, music and socializing. The end.

Highlights:
Frank:
- "Authorship Society": technology is changing how we make things and more and more people are experiencing authorship than ever before

- the old 'expertise' or apprenticeship model is too time consuming and costly

- creatives are now needing to become jacks-of-all-trades

- speed is becoming more and more crucial to business - "real-time engagement"

- learning to improvise and reach conclusions on the spot is becoming more useful and necessary than ever before

Pine:
- pretty satellite pictures

- yet again we are told how science will reveal everything in time and give us the answers for ultimate meaning (or lack thereof)

Antonelli:
- interesting art + design explorations into safety - some witty, some lovely, some useful, others silly art bullshit

- "Design can make a difference in how people manage extreme situations"

Sgmeister:
- Kottke.org summarized his talk far better than I could, you can find it at:
