From the VAULT: OLD SCHOOL

A Trip Down Memory Lane

I so enjoyed viewing Michael Beirut's portfolio from his college years on the DesignObserver blog that I thought it might be fun for somebody if I share mine. Now I am the first to admit that I am no Michael Beirut — I am not and never will be anything like a talent like his — but I thought that perhaps for that very reason, my BFA design portfolio might have even more entertainment value.

So here we go, Paul Rustand's BFA portfolio from Dec 1994, East Carolina University, Jenkins School of Fine Art...

We’ll start off with the earliest work in the portfolio, a “graphic translation” project from my very first design class, “Introduction to Communication Arts.” At this point in time (1992) the Mac was just beginning to be embraced by the design industry as a whole, so we still had to learn things the old “commercial art” way. This was a cut paper project (yes, we cut it out of expensive pantone paper with xactos) 18" x 24" in actual size, a threesome of postage stamps... Although for the fine type my professor let me use a xerox transparency (thanks Ms. Walker! — you can see it fell over the face of the middle guy on this photo). My subject was european graphic artists and our professor’s advice to not date the piece by choosing the actual postage rate of 1992 has paid off in huge dividends...

These next five are all part of the same project from my Illustration II class (I was pretty much an illustration major). The project was to create a series of at least 3 related illustrations and then place them into context. I chose to illustrate the old Jack folk tales (of which Jack & the Beanstalk is one) and make them into a book. I rewrote the story and made a small edition of books, complete with real needles and spools in the spine. What a geek!

A cover design from Type I for the long gone type journal Ligature. This was back in the early days of deconstructivism and Emigre and Cranbrook and “alternative” music. You can see the chaotic Raygun influences here.

More “alternative” looking designs, this time a logo and menu design for a faux club/restaurant...

And some monochromatic illustration work for a short story on the Pony Express (why is he not running?)...

Full color illustration work for an editorial magazine layout. The professor’s assigned subject matter for the editorial was on the then controversial issue of allowing gays in the military. My article was titled “Shooting Straight” — get it?

Illustration and package design for the George Winston album “Autumn.”

Another one color illustration on an African folktale about why the moon waxes and wanes (the rhino ate it).

A portfolio for illustrations based on the novel Waiting for the End of the World.

A logo and graphic standards manual for the fictitious high end postmodern hotel chain Andante (Tim and I silkscreened that black on black, aren’t we clever!).

And lastly, my favorite, from Type II, a logo and package design for Swiggle juice boxes. Just remember kids, “Nothin’ makes you giggle like the fruity taste of Swiggle!”
